Lemons or Limes?

I spent some time today thinking over what a website should be, and how to make one. I decided to make a new, private, web design notebook, one where I could make a quick mockup and work out an idea. Not complete sites, but just to see where color, style, and feeling could get me.

It’s liberating to throw away content management systems, templates, auto-generated pages, and pre-defined code and just focus on an idea. Too often these things start out with all this crap thrown into it – auto-generated from WordPress or Tumblr, or whatever, and I work for it instead of it working for me. That’s not the point of a content management system.

We’re not out of the woods yet!

Literally.

Notebook October - December 2010

These are selected pages from my October 15, 2010 to December 20, 2010 notebook. Click on the images for a closer look.

Amidst a hectic schedule I managed to study weiqi (winning my first game on a 19x19 board!), learn to make seitan, lay down the concepts and design for both this site and The Surrounding Game, and work on our annual handmade holiday card.

If you’d like to know more about any specific image I’ve included notes on them in my notebook set on flickr.

Created in Adobe Ideas and slightly tweaked in Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to create a Simple Desktops vibe. You can see it in action on my new website about the game of Weiqi (also known as Go and Baduk) at The Surrounding Game.
